7. Drona Parva
The Book of Drona · 202 adhyayas
Dronacharya commands for five days, and every rule of war is broken in them. Sixteen-year-old Abhimanyu is surrounded and killed inside the chakravyuha. Arjuna vows to kill Jayadratha, and Krishna veils the sun so that he can. At the end, a half-truth — 'Ashwatthama is dead' — makes Drona lay down his weapons, and Dhrishtadyumna beheads him.
What Happens in Drona Parva
With Bhishma fallen, Dronacharya takes command, and the war changes character. Drona's brief from Duryodhana is to capture Yudhishthira alive, and to do it he forms the chakravyuha — a spiral formation almost nobody in the Pandava army knows how to enter.
Abhimanyu does. He is sixteen, and he learned the way in while still in his mother's womb; he never heard how to get out. He breaks the formation, holds it open, and the Kaurava commanders close it behind him. What follows is the epic's clearest account of a rule being abandoned: six maharathis, Drona and Karna among them, surround one boy, cut his bowstring, break his chariot, and kill him with his own wheel in his hands. Jayadratha's holding of the gate is what kept the other Pandavas out.
Arjuna returns and vows to kill Jayadratha before the next sunset or enter fire himself. The entire fourteenth day is built around that vow; Krishna veils the sun, the Kauravas relax their guard, and Arjuna takes Jayadratha's head as the light returns. The fighting continues into the night — Ghatotkacha's rampage forces Karna to spend the Shakti, the one-use weapon he had saved for Arjuna. And on the fifteenth day comes the half-truth: Bhima kills an elephant named Ashwatthama, and Yudhishthira, who has never lied, says that Ashwatthama is dead, adding 'the elephant' so quietly that Drona does not hear it. Drona lays down his weapons in grief and Dhrishtadyumna beheads him.

What Drona Parva Teaches
The end of dharma-yuddha
Every convention agreed before the war is broken inside these five days — numbers against one, attacking the unarmed, fighting after sunset, deceiving a teacher. Drona Parva is where the Mahabharat stops pretending that a righteous war stays righteous once it is going badly.
Knowledge half-learned
Abhimanyu's death is caused by incomplete knowledge — he learned the entry and not the exit. The epic is unsentimental about it: courage without the whole of the skill gets a boy killed, and the adults who let him go in knew it.
A technically true sentence
Yudhishthira does not utter a falsehood; he utters a truth designed to deceive, and the epic treats that as the same thing. His chariot, which had always ridden a little above the ground, settles onto it from that moment.
Drona Parva — Frequently Asked Questions
Dronacharya commands the Kaurava army for five days. Abhimanyu is killed inside the chakravyuha, Arjuna vows to kill Jayadratha and does so, Ghatotkacha is killed by Karna's Shakti, and Drona himself is beheaded by Dhrishtadyumna after Yudhishthira's half-truth.
A spiral or wheel-shaped military formation, extremely difficult to penetrate and designed so that anyone who enters is cut off and surrounded. Drona used it to try to capture Yudhishthira alive.
He had heard Arjuna explain how to break into the formation while he was still in Subhadra's womb, but she fell asleep before the explanation of how to get out. He could enter it and hold it open; he could not leave.
Bhima killed an elephant named Ashwatthama and announced the death. Yudhishthira confirmed that Ashwatthama was dead, adding 'the elephant' inaudibly. Believing his son killed, Drona laid down his weapons and sat in meditation, and Dhrishtadyumna beheaded him.
Jayadratha had blocked the entrance to the chakravyuha and kept the other Pandavas from reaching Abhimanyu. Holding him responsible for his son's death, Arjuna swore to kill him before sunset the next day or enter fire himself.
